3 out of 5 stars Very good, but consider the bundled software   October 1, 2008

OK, from what I've read, you're going to be better off with the Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme. Why? Because from the research I've done, the backup software that comes with the Western Digital My Book Home Edition is only a 30 day trial version. I had a hard time finding thorough reviews of the latest hard drives (October 1, 2008). The Western Digital and Seagate models I've mentioned are pretty equally ranked. However, what sold me on the Seagate FreeAgent Extreme is that it has built-in software (not trial software) for backing up your data. That means no additional expense for the software. The reviews from various sources like PCworld.com, cnet.com, bit-tech.net, consumersearch.com, had good things to say about both the Western Digital and the Seagate hard drives that I've mentioned.

This obviously isn't a full review of this hard drive -I'm no computer guru, but the software package is very important to me and I thought this little bit of information might be helpful to someone else too.

3 out of 5 stars The drive can be powered up after automatic standby   September 29, 2008

As another reviewer mentioned that the drive goes power down state and the drive letter in windows explorer just disappear and nothing can bring it back until recycle the power up/down. He also mentioned the reset button does not work.

But actually, the reset button on the back does work. The correct way is to push the button and hold it for a few seconds until you see the front light started brinking again. Then after a few seconds, windows will recognize the drive letter again....

However, I will rate this as 3 stars. The reason is I also encounter the drive goes into 'semi-'standby mode when I watched a movie directly off the drive and then I pause the movie. Then I came back after more than 10 mins. My Windows appeared to be freezed. The reason being I guess the drive just tried to sleep again even while some program is still accessing the drive.

So far, I have use the drive for about 5 months now. Still the drive is working. There are some clicking noise when I access files on the drive which I think.. is normal for any harddisk.

5 out of 5 stars perfectly happy so far   September 14, 2008

I have bought a few months ago a My Book 320 and I thought of getting something bigger this time.
Hooked it up to my iMac intel by firewire, and like his little brother did (though through USB that one) it worked immediately.
Chose it to be my Time Machine back-up drive and...voila' .... and by the way I love the ice-cold light in front, it's cool.
I'm surprised that this little fella has received so many bad reviews.
I was almost going to buy something else... but then I stuck to my previous positive experience with this product line and went for it. Although I bought it at Costco, just to make sure I could return it easily. ;-)
So far so good and gret value for money.
Maybe I am just lucky.
It is clear that if so many rotten apples have been shipped out... WD should get a new quality control manager in place rather quickly!

I have had the drive for 2 weeks and it works fine. I'am currently using the USB connection and it could be a lil faster, the disk takes some time to repond, maybe because its big. Other than that, the Hard drive is working fine for now and I recomend you get one.
