5 out of 5 stars Lacie starck   July 31, 2010

This is plain and simple a great external hard drive. The one and only thing I do not like about it is that it requires power from a wall outlet, which it is impossible to supply a tb hardrive with enough power from the laptop so it was necessary. It runs great. I haven't had any problems. It's quiet. Works with both mac and windows. And it is built with great quality that cannot be compared with other hard drives. I highly recommend buying this hardrive.

4 out of 5 stars Very satisfactory   July 23, 2010

Excellent drive. Very good value for this size and quality. Not really appreciating the Phillipe Stark design - it is very utilitarian, but this is no problem. My only issue is the short USB cord that cannot be replaced because it has a unique connector to the drive.

5 out of 5 stars Can a Hard Drive Be Sexy?!?   June 17, 2010

I'm not sure if a hard drive can be sexy, but this one comes very close. It's amazing how such a small detail, the sleek design of the cover, moves this devise from a piece of equipment to a piece of art.

The hard drive was incredibly easy to set up; I just plugged it into my computer and followed the instructions.

If you're computer or media setup is in a public location in your house, this is a great hard drive. It adds a touch of style and elegance to your setup. This is not a hard drive that wants to be hidden away!

4 out of 5 stars Hardware great, software so-so   May 28, 2010
William Berg (Gainesville, FL)
This is a very nicely designed backup system, but I was surprised to find it didn't have backup software of matching quality. What is included is the "Genie Backup System" hardware. This is functional, and I've used it in the past before getting this hard drive, but I find the software rather challenging to manage. It does include a "tutorial" that is simply a silent video in which you see a cursor moving around doing things with no accompanying explanation, audio or text. You can go to the help file for documentation, but there you'll often find contorted text such as I found for the restore process: "If you want to restore data from a backup that was created on the same computer you are restoring to, and the original backup job configuration is still present, you can load the backup and browse backed up files and folders even if the backup archive itself is not accessible at the time." Now maybe this makes sense to you, but I'm still not sure what it is they are saying. What I was looking for was a nice step by step process, preferably accompanied by screen shots. But no such luck. So my advice is to go out and find yourself some better software. If I wasn't so cheap, that's what I would do! And maybe if I get sufficiently frustrated with trying to understand Genie, that's what I will.
